You are ready to start genealogical research on your family, but...what is good genealogical research? How do you sort fact from family stories? The last twenty years have seen an explosion of interest in genealogy with huge amounts of records becoming available through the Internet. In this introduction to the art and science of family research, we will find and explore the many kinds of records that document and illuminate our ancestors’ lives. Students will need basic computer skills and a valid email address. Using free internet resources, we will find what records are available, how to read them, what they meant to our forebearers, and how to use them to track your family back through time. We will explore some ways to go beyond free online resources to find records tucked away in online subscriptions sites, in libraries and archives, and what resources like DNA testing can tell you about your family. Find out about the lives of your ancestors and how they fit into the panorama of American history.
